Team Epic's Root from Recovery .zip

This page contains the simplest method to root most stock ROM's.  Once you have CWM recovery on your phone, simply flash this .zip and it should root your phone.  While this .zip should work on most phones, these instructions are currently recommended ONLY for SGS3 LTE.

Supported Phones
  • Tested: SGS LTE variants (like Sprint SGS3)
  • Might work on other phone stock ROM's that have at least 1.5MB free space in /system.  Please report your experiences testing this on different phones.
  • We don't know if this works on any GB stock ROM's.  If you test it, please let us know!
Download
  • TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip [1] [2]
    • md5sum 9ba201ffe1b788d8263c7ebd086b7883
    • Changelog
      • v5  If v4 worked for you, you don't need v5.
        • Now automatically cleans out old root files to prevent conflicts.
        • Updated with Superuser 3.1.3 and su binary 3.1
      • v4 Now prevents the stock recovery from being restored by the ROM.

Instructions
  1. Install CWM recovery on your phone.
  2. Copy TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v*.zip in your phone's internal storage.
  3. Boot into Recovery.
    • Power off.
    • Power on, immediately hold Volume Up, Home and Power buttons until recovery appears.
  4. Flash TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v*.zip.
  5. Now when you boot into Samsung's ROM, you should be able to authorize root applications via the Superuser application.
If you appreciate our work, please consider supporting Team Epic with a tiny contribution!

    6. Is the TeamEpic...zip file in the S3 root directory supposed to be a tar?

I have Odin auto reboot unchecked.

After confirmation of CWM load, I unplug USB, pull battery, reinsert battery, hold volume-up/home/power until vibration and then release.

      T-mobile Recovery page comes up.

    2. On odin uncheck auto reboot. Flash CWM again and after its successful unplug the usb cable and remove the battery. Put battery back and then put it recovery mode. It should now boot to CWM.

Again do not let it autoboot (uncheck it) thats the problem.

  10. I downloaded the {TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5} zip file and when I tried to "copy" the zip into my phone's internal storage, it will not let me copy/move the zip onto my phone... Why is this?

    1. Hey, don't know if you've figured this out yet, but I had the same problem. Running Vista (I suspect it as the culprit cuz Vista is evil), and I dinstalled the samsung drivers, but it would not let me copy over the TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip file to my phone as a media storage device. However, when I navigated further into the SPH-L710 "drive" there was a root directory/drive called "Phone"

It stil wouldn't let me copy to the Phone root directory but it WOULD let me copy to one of the sub-directories inside there, such as "Android."

That's where I copied the TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip file. I realized that once you do the Odin steps and get to CWM, you can navigate to the directory where you saved that file. Remember to click "Install zip from INTERNAL sdcard" before. Was able to successfully select the right zip file and everything went smoothly after that.

  16. I ran Odin3 successfully with CWM-Recovery-LTE-SGS3-v5.tar.md5, but when I launch recovery to proceed to next step I still get the old Android Recovery menu not CW Recovery. Should I proceed? I thought about loading CW Recovery again but I can no longer get to Android down load screen -- I only get to recovery screen now.

  21. Hi. Thanks for all the hard work! :) I rooted this way and it was a breeze!

Quick question - How can I install the OTA update from a few days ago? Will it "just work" if I install it as though I wasn't rooted? Will it break root?

    Thanks!

    1. This package isn't installed using Odin. You use Odin to install the CWM Recovery interface into your firmware, then from there, select this zip file from your SD/internal storage. You'll need to first copy this file onto your SD card, before shutting down the phone for the first time.

  43. I have a SGH-T999 (T-Mobile) running Android 4.1.1. I've installed clockwork recovery, and installed root-from-recovery-v5, but a few seconds (10-30 seconds) after booting, the phone locks, and reboots, starting the cycle again. I can reliably run the remove-root-from-recovery-signed mad, which removes root, and everything returns to normal (sans root). At any time, I can reboot into recovery, re-apply the root-from-recovery, reboot and get the same crash cycle.

What should I check or where can I find logs to determine what is crashing the phone? How could I solve this? Where should I be asking this question? (It's remarkably difficult to find relevant solutions via searching due to the overloaded terms: "root from recovery crash after booting".) I'm pretty new to rooting, but am seasoned at debugging.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm really interested in gaining root access.
